Is Bing Sizzle or Slam? July 14, 2009

There has been a lot of discussion regarding the growth of the Microsoft search engine Bing this week. The question is: Is Bing growing fast enough?
Bing growing fast enough?

Statcounter presents the following numbers for the US for July 9:
Google (NSDQ: GOOG) : 75 percent
Microsoft’s Bing (NSDQ: MSFT): 13 percent
Yahoo! (NSDQ: YHOO): 10 percent
However, these are numbers for one day only. On average Bing is slightly below Yahoo!
Hitwise’s numbers for June puts Bing behind Yahoo:
Google: 74 percent
Yahoo!: 16 percent
Bing: 5 percent (growing from 3.4 percent in the first week to 7 percent by the end of the month)
Ask: 3 percent
Mashable reports that the latest June data from Compete.com shows that Bing is now the 13th most visited site on the planet.
There is definitely a forward momentum for Bing: Its share of searches is growing.
And what is more important, in Bing Microsoft has managed to develop a search service that is well executed, easy to use and — even more important — innovative.
The fact that Bing now includes Twitter tweets from selected “prominent people” shows that they are ahead in some areas.
Microsoft needs positive press to continue climbing, and the buzz right now must be encouraging for them. It brings in new searchers, and what is more important: It gives readers the impression (a correct one in our opinion) that Bing is, indeed, a quality tool that deserves a try out.
And here is the problem: Microsoft needs to convince searchers to do more than just “try out” Bing. They need them to switch to Bing or at least use it as their number two search engine.
If they manage to do that, Bing may achieve an organic growth powered by the “word of mouth” principle: People talking to their friends about how good the new search engine is. That was how Google gained its hegemony.
In the long term it doesn’t really matter that Bing beats Yahoo! this month. What really matters is that Bing keeps on growing.
We will have to wait for a few more months to see if this will really happen.
Google To Acquire GrandCentral July 4, 2009

Google is in acquisition discussions with telephone management startup GrandCentral, we’ve learned, and we have a high degree of confidence that the deal has actually been closed. We are trying to nail down the acquisition price. Just last week I flagged this company as the most exciting startup we’re currently tracking.
The basic idea around GrandCentral is “one phone number for all your phones, for life.” As we change jobs, homes and cell phones, there are a lot of phone numbers to keep track of, and keeping everyone up to date with your most recent phone numbers is a real cost. If you use GrandCentral you can give out a single phone number. What happens when that person calls that number depends on his/her relationship to you, and what you are doing at the time.
The company, which has raised less than $6 million in capital from Minor Ventures (the exact amount has never been disclosed), beta launched just last September. Earlier this year mainstream press
and blogger
attention heated up.
The company may have received too much press attention before the product was ready, and we reported on some backlash from beta users abandoning the service in March. Still, the company pushed ahead, launching a mobile product and other features.
GrandCentral was recently pitching a second round of financing to Silicon Valley venture capitalists, but broke off discussions abruptly as the Google talks heated up.
I’m speculating on where Google will use GrandCentral, but the synergies with Gmail and GTalk are fairly obvious and could be the next step in Google’s competition with Skype and other instant messaging platforms.
This is, in my opinion, a great move by Google. Grand Central is an awesome productivity and simplifies the lives of users with multiple phones by giving them a single phone number and letting them handle calls via rules. It’s a natural fit with GTalk and Gmail.
Google won’t comment on this story. I have an email in to GrandCentral to see if they’ll confirm.
Google brand update introduced in UK July 4, 2009

An update was announced and implemented in the US by Google earlier this year that helps to boost the rank of big brands in search results. The update was implemented in the UK this weekend.
After the Google update, the search results will rank authority websites better in regards to the keywords that are included in the websites.
Previously, if a company or brand wanted to gain a good rank for a frequently used key term the only thing it could do was to undertake immense link building along with advanced on page SEO. But now, after the update has been implemented, Google is improving the ability of authority websites to rank depending on internal linking as well as their external target links.
This implies that from now it will be much easier to get a good rank in the search results for relevant websites. Large brands and popular companies will benefit immensely from this new inclusion in Google.
Changes in Google UK affecting search results adversely July 4, 2009

Google is trying a new feature in its country specific search engine. Google’s UK homepage usually offers a radio button which users can click on to receive search results that are specific to certain regions. This allowed the users to receive accurate and precise results for their search.
Recently while using Google’s Chrome browser people have found that the traditional radio button is missing. Instead, what is provided is a text link that sometimes appears on top of the search results while at other times it can be seen at the bottom of the search results. This inconsistency may cost the proprietors dearly.
The problem is that sometimes the text link is missing from the website altogether. When the text link is not displayed anywhere in the webpage the websites from other parts of the world are displayed at top positions in the search result page.
In these times of immense competition between Google, Yahoo and Bing, this small glitch could prove to be a big problem for Google.
Bing News fails to tackle internet traffic initiated by Jackson’s death July 4, 2009

The unfortunate news of Michael Jackson’s death created havoc on the Internet. As the initial reports regarding the death of the pop star started coming in late on Thursday night, a large number of people searched for information. The Internet traffic was so great that Google management thought the server of the website was under attack.
The statistics of Microsoft also confirmed that the Internet traffic enquiring about Michael Jackson had been flowing in at unusually large numbers. Microsoft officials have accepted that Bing News could have handled the upsurge in a better way.
When people started searching about Michael Jackson in Bing News, the website failed to flash the recent stories on the top priority basis. Although Bing News had the report about Michael Jackson’s death, the news remained hidden at the bottom of the page. While ideally, under the circumstances, the report of Michael Jackson’s should have been the top news, the site was showing image results.
Sources have revealed that Microsoft has a tool known as “news go big” which it can use when a specific news item takes the world by storm. If the tool was used in Bing News, the search results would have been search specific and could have tackled the staggering Internet traffic in a much better way.

Here are some new methods of Link Building: Given is the complete details on the vaious methods available for link popularity building.
#Reciprocal Links : This is one of the method used in building links from related sites. In this method, you send email to link partner web site to add your links, they add your link and they send you information of their web site to add in you web site. You add their link in your web site. Once both add links of each other, its counted as one link.
#Directory Submission : Directory Submission in quality web directories is also one way of link building from directories, there are many quality free directories with high PR which can provide you good back links for your web site.
# Link from non commercial sites – Links from .edu and .org websites are good for increasing your site’s rankings and are more important than ever. Everyone knows about using inurl:.edu/phpbb2, inurl:.gov/phpbb2, inurl:.gov/forum, etc. I like to also go on Google and search by school name with forum, blog, or community next to it. You can also search for “edu forum” (w/out quotations). One of the simplest ways is just posting a job in the schools job section. A lot of schools allow companies to post a job in their career section with a link. These links are usually w/out anchor text, but are dofollow and edu!
#Article Links – Links from the author by-line or within the article that point back to your site will positively affect your rankings.
#Link from established sites - If your site is referred from big behemoth site like Wikipedia, Yahoo, AOL, Ebay, Amazon, etc., you will rank better than you did before.
#Use Link Bait – Although the term “link bait” is fairly new, the entire concept of link bait has been around as long as the internet itself. People have been creating controversial, funny, and informative web sites and web site content that others naturally link to.
#Post messages on forums – Post messages on related forums , make sure they are readable by seach engine, while some of them have no-index attribute on their page.

Basically this feature has nothing new added into Google except the help pages which tell searchers how to make the best use of search and what can be done using these engines.
The help pages are into Yahoo, Bing as well but only difference is that Google has thought to link the page directly from the home page.
